Stand near the center of your sanctuary when the room is completely empty and quiet. Clap your hands sharply once and listen closely.

  • Do you hear a clean decay, or do you hear a rapid-fire fluttering sound (known as flutter echo or slap echo)?

  • If your clap rattles back and forth between parallel walls like a ping-pong ball, your sound system is fighting that exact same acoustic reflection every time someone speaks into a microphone.

Step 2: Walk the Room During a Rehearsal

Turn on your sound system at normal operating volume and play a spoken-word track or a rehearsal recording. Walk slowly from the front row to the very back corners of the sanctuary.

  • Notice where the vocals suddenly become muddy and unintelligible.

  • Identify dead zones where low frequencies build up and rumble uncontrollably, and hot spots where high frequencies pierce your ears.

Step 3: Map Your Hard Boundaries

Take a clipboard and walk the perimeter of your sanctuary. Make a simple floor plan noting where the hard, parallel reflective surfaces are located.
