Moving from one location to two: or two to five: is one of the most exhilarating and exhausting seasons a church technical director will ever face. It’s a moment where your systems are finally put to the test. Will they scale gracefully, or will they snap under the pressure of a multi-site launch?

The biggest mistake churches make during expansion is "buying for the room." They treat the new campus like a standalone project. But in a multi-site model, every campus is part of a single ecosystem.

Future-proofing begins by defining your ministry model first. Are you doing live teaching at every site, or a "broadcast and receive" model? If it’s the latter, your latency requirements and video transport needs change drastically. A long-term AV strategy ensures that the decisions you make for Campus B don't prevent you from launching Campus C three years later.

1. Standardize the Tech Stack (The "Copy-Paste" Method)

Standardization is the "secret sauce" of multi-site success. When every campus uses a different audio console, a different lighting desk, and a different streaming encoder, your support burden grows exponentially.

Why Standardization Matters:

3. Mastering the Latency Budget

In a multi-site environment, "latency" is the enemy of engagement. If your teaching pastor is on a screen at a remote campus, and there is a three-second delay between the audio and video, the congregation will feel it.

You need to establish a "Latency Tier" for every use case:

  1. In-Room IMAG: Under 100ms. This requires uncompressed or very lightly compressed video paths (like SDI or low-latency AV-over-IP).

  2. Campus-to-Campus Teaching: 1–2 seconds is often acceptable, provided the remote campus manages the service flow to accommodate the "gap."

  3. Online Streaming: 5–10 seconds is standard.

By designing a flexible AV infrastructure that prioritizes low-latency transport for the teaching feed, you ensure that the "one church, many locations" feel is preserved.
